It’s the Friday after Thanksgiving: you have more leftover turkey than you do Tupperware containers, the scale says you weigh eight pounds more than you did on Wednesday, and the last thing you want to do is race around a store and sit in shopping traffic. What to do?

If this sounds like a familiar scenario, you’re not alone. I too suffered from the post-Thanksgiving stupor. I used to sleep in—savoring the vacation day—then wandered aimlessly around the house before landing on the couch. Still PJ-clad, I noshed on a piece of pie for breakfast and then spent the day watching an obscene number of Christmas movies.

While there’s nothing wrong with a day of relaxation, my Black Fridays were spent borderline comatose. Last year I decided it was time for a change. I needed to shake the turkey-slump. If you’re ready for a change of pace too, here are a few tips:

Get Moving

Start the day off with some sort of physical activity. Whether you take Spot out for a walk, get a heated game of Wii tennis going, or chase your cousins around, you’ll feel better after you get moving. After a day of family and eating, it’s nice to expend some energy—and some calories.

Go (Online) Shopping

The idea of spending the night in a tent outside of Target only to get in a fight with Black Friday diehards never really appealed to me. Call me crazy.

Instead, make yourself a latte (pumpkin spice of course), pop a squat on the couch, and grab your computer. You can find amazing sales, awesome shipping deals, and fabulous new products without leaving your living room. Last year, I completed my Christmas shopping without breaking a sweat: cat eye sunglasses for my sister, a winter scarf for mom, a terrible great holiday tie for dad, and sport sunglasses for the brothers. Does it get much easier?

Get cookin’

If your Grandma is anything like mine, our Thanksgiving feast could feed a small country. Needless to say, we end up with more leftovers than we know what to do with. Clear the food clutter by using the leftovers to create delicious freezer-friendly meals. Here’s a yummy soup I made last year and froze for future helpings.

Turkey Tortilla Soup


  • 1 (11 oz) can Mexican-style corn
  • 1 (16 oz) can chili beans, undrained
  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans chicken broth
  • 1 (16 oz) jar chunky salsa
  • 2 ½ cups of cooked, chopped turkey
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro


  1. Combine corn, chili beans, broth, and salsa in a large pot over medium heat. Bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat and stir in the cooked turkey. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Cover, and cook 5 to 10 minutes more, until heating through. Stir in cilantro.
  4. Ladle the soup into bowls and top with guacamole, sour cream, cheese or tortilla chips. Serves 4.

Spend time with family

Okay, so you spent all of Thanksgiving with your family, but these times only come once a year so cherish them. Break out the board games or check out the SunglassWarehouse team’s post-Thanksgiving movie picks. Better yet, get a game of football going or head to the ice skating rink. Take advantage of the time with your family—that is what the holiday is about, after all.
