DIY Party Photo Booth

When it comes to parties, if you didn’t Instagram it, it didn’t happen. Right? If that’s the new golden rule for social events, it’s up to you to give your holiday party guests the perfect opportunity to take a photo they’ll never forget … or that they’ll at least post on social media.

This easy DIY photo booth is something you can whip up on any wall in your home. The best part is that this backdrop looks great through any lens, whether you’re using a professional camera, a simple point and shoot, or like most of us, smartphones and photo apps. Read on for instructions to craft the perfect photo!

The way you style your photo booth is totally up to you! Whether you keep it simple or go all out, pick holiday-themed props and decorations that are fun and eye-catching. Here’s what we used for our photo booth:

  • Wrapping paper
  • Fake snow (to throw in the air for action shots!)
  • Scissors
  • Fishing line
  • Santa hat
  • Tinsel
  • Sunglasses (check out these)
  • Snowflake ornaments
  • Painter’s tape
  • Any other holiday decorations and props you can think of!

1. Pick your space

The first step in putting together your photo booth is picking your space. Any large wall should work just fine, but we recommend picking one near some windows (for natural lighting). The beauty of this DIY project is that it doesn’t have to look perfect — you can crop your background when you’re taking the actual photos (see the photo below!).

2. Set up your booth

Once you’ve picked the location of your photo booth, it’s time to set it up! Hang several large strips of wrapping paper on the wall using Painter’s tape (we used three strips). To achieve the wintery look we were going for, we hung some silver tinsel along the top of the frame, propped up two glittery winter branches against the wall, and dangled six snowflake ornaments from the ceiling using fishing line and Painter’s tape.

3. Strike a pose

Grab your props and strike a pose! We scrounged up a Santa hat and some wrapped gifts to use in front of our winter wonderland background. Pose on your own, with a friend, or as a group — get creative and you’ll end up with lots of memorable (and laughable) photos!

4. Edit like a pro

Creating cool, shareable photos has never been easier with smartphones and the many photo apps on the market. You probably already have a favorite editing platform, but if you really want to create that classic photo booth feel (with a modern twist, of course), check out these apps below! They’re easy to use and are sure to be a hit at your holiday party.

5. Have fun!

Pour yourself some eggnog, pump up the music, and enjoy a fun night with friends snapping holiday photos! We know this easy DIY booth will be a fun addition to your party.
