It won’t be long before the fall chill arrives and the leaves begin to turn to the colors of an autumn rainbow. While you may have recently taken a summer vacation, the stresses of school and work can leave you needing a quick getaway. No matter where you may live in the U.S., there is an autumnal gem waiting to be discovered!
We put together a list of five great fall road trip destinations located all across America. Check them out and start planning!
North: Portland, Maine
It’s no surprise that colorful fall foliage is the main focus of these fall getaways. Known as the Forest City, Portland is a peninsula with beautiful waterfront views that make it a great spot for fall festivities. Aside from viewing the beautiful fall colors of the many recreational areas in the city, make plans to take a cruise on Casco Bay, take a walking or trolly tour, or attend a Harvest on the Harbor event. Visit the Portland CVB for more information on attractions and events.
Midwest: Chicago, Illinois
The Windy City during fall is a beautiful sight! The Chicago CVB offers information on a number of attractions and events. Some of the must-do activities? Visit the amazing skydeck at Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), the attractions at Navy Pier, the Cloud Gate at Millennium Park, and the Lincoln Park and Garfield Park conservatories.
There are few sights more beautiful than the Smoky Mountains in fall. While the gorgeous reds and golds of the fall foliage are an attraction in their own right, you cannot miss out on the amusements of Ober Gatlinburg including the aerial tramway, scenic chairlift, and the alpine slide. The Smoky Mountain Harvest Fest and Oktoberfest at Ober are just two of the great seasonal events recommended by the Gatlinburg Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
West: Aspen, Colorado
Nature is the main attraction at this Colorado destination. Set against the majestic Rocky Mountains, forested lands, and pristine lakes, the beautiful scenery is not to be underestimated! Go camping along Maroon Creek, take in the view from Independence Pass, and take advantage of the many opportunities for shopping (who would want to miss that?!), dining, and fine arts. Get more info on what to see and do at the Aspen Chamber of Commerce website.
Way out west, the city of Seattle offers a perfect mix of colorful fall foliage, attractions, and fun fall events. Make plans to visit the Snoqualmie Falls, ride the new Seattle Great Wheel on Pier 57, peruse the famous Pike Place Market, or take a dinner cruise among the twinkling city lights and shimmering waters of Puget Sound.
