Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, and we know you’ve got big party plans underway. Revamp a pair of sunglasses, old or new, to give your Cinco party outfit some punch. Earlier this year, DIY blogger Hands Occupied crafted a pair of friendship bracelet shades using a pair of our sunglasses. We liked her finished product so much we decided to try it for ourselves on a pair of Cinco de Mayo party shades! Check out our tutorial below for easy step-by-step instructions:

  • Embroidery floss in bright colors
  • Scissors
  • Sunglasses
  • Mod Podge

Step 1

Pick your first color of embroidery floss and cut off a long piece. (We cut ours about 2 ft. long, but it’ll depend on how thick you want your stripe and how thick the sunglass arms are. Adjust accordingly!) Tie one end of the floss to the base of your sunglasses’ arms.

Step 2

Take your floss and pull it to the right side of the arm. Bring the end of the floss underneath the sunglass’ arm, leaving a loop to the right side of the arm with your floss. (Kind of like you’re creating a backwards number 4 with the floss and arm.) Pull the end of the floss up and around the top of the arm, and finish the knot by pulling the floss through your loop. Pull to tighten. Repeat, and you’ll create little side-by-side knots on the inside of the sunglasses’ arms.

Step 3

When you’re ready to switch colors, knot your new piece of floss to the tail of your current floss. Be careful to make sure there are no gaps between your colors, and begin repeating the same process as before (see Step 2).

You can alternate lots of different colors like our poncho-inspired pair, or keep it focused like our Mexican flag-inspired retro square styles.

Step 4

When you’re done threading your embroidery floss around both arms, use a paintbrush to coat the arms in Mod Podge. This will prevent loose threads from fraying and will hold the thread in place so it doesn’t slide around. Don’t worry, the Mod Podge will dry clear!

Step 5

Let the Mod Podge dry overnight — and then your sunglasses are ready to wear!
