Flag Day is quickly approaching, and although not an official federal holiday, June 14 gives all Americans yet another reason to celebrate the “land of the free and home of the brave” under the hot summer sun. Flag Day honors the adoption of the national flag of the United States of America, nicknamed Old Glory. It is our patriotic duty here at Sunglass Warehouse to show off our favorite  red, white, and blue must-haves for the June 14th festivities. In honor of Old Glory, Sunglass Warehouse proudly presents our Flag Day inspired shades!

For the sunglass-wearing history buffs out there, on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed The Flag Act establishing an official U.S. flag.  The Flag Act declaration stated,  “The flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation,” according to PBS. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson  established a proclamation acknowledging a nationwide observance of Flag Day, but it was not until 1949 that President Harry S. Truman signed an Act Of Congress assigning the 14th day of June every year as National Flag Day, according to The National Flag Day Foundation.

Today’s flag consists of 13 horizontal stripes, alternating with 7 red and 6 white stripes. The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies, and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union.  The colors on the flag are very symbolic, according to PBS: “Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.”

Happy Flag Day!
