Southern Hemisphere Hotspots

I don’t know about you guys, but this picture does nothing for me. I’m not the biggest fan of snow: the plowing, the dangerous driving, and the dirty snow that leaves behind soggy ground. Sure, it can be pretty, but I’ve seen my fair share of picturesque landscapes. One thing that gives me hope is thinking of all the southern hemisphere hot-spots right now. It also makes me pretty jealous…

Brazil

Copacabana Beach

Get some serious sun (and check out our safe sun tips!) in Copacabana, in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro. Relax on the beaches, or take a stroll on the famous promenade. Copacabana will also be one of the four Olympic Zones for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Iguazu Falls

So it’s not a beach, but Iguazu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina, is definitely impressive. Named after the Iguazu River that flows through Brazil, this waterfall is actually taller than our great Niagara Falls. Enjoy the best of both worlds while you’re here and soak up the Brazilian and Argentinian sun!

Top Brazil Must-sees: Fernando de Noronha, for the diving and snorkeling lovers. Salvador beaches, if sailing is your thing. Pantanal, the worlds largest wetland, if you’re after some wildlife. And lastly, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro from February 18-21.

Africa

Take a trip to the bottom of Africa — literally — by visiting Cape Town, South Africa! Whether it’s city or beach that you’re after, Cape Town has them both. Beaches along the False Bay, opposite the Atlantic Ocean, tend to be a little warmer than those right on the Atlantic.

Muizenberg Beach Huts

Spend a night in one of the colorful Muizenberg Beach Huts on the False Bay, or take a hike along Devil’s Peak or Lion’s Head mountains. If nature isn’t you’re thing, Capetown has the highest density of Cape Dutch-style buildings in the world, which gives the city a slight European feel.

Australia

If you’re thinking about a trip Down Under, Australia is packed with vacation possibilities. From beaches, to city life, to hiking, there is plenty to do here!

australian reefs

One must-see in Australia is the Great Barrier Reef! Search for snorkeling tours that match your budget and make sure you don’t miss this opportunity. If you’re not a strong swimmer, you can opt for a tour with a glass-bottom boat. So cool! Cairns is a great place to experience the reef, as are other locations along the coast of Queensland.

Get your fill of city life by poking around Sydney, and soak up some rays on Bondi Beach.

blue mountains australia

Get your hike on in the Blue Mountains, near Sydney, and see The Three Sisters for yourself.

As with any foreign travels, make sure you take the time to research the area you’re traveling to. If you’re headed somewhere sunny, grab that swimsuit, some hot shades, and and have fun!

(But please, don’t brag to me about your warm-weather travels :)  )

Super Bowl Fever

Super Bowl madness is taking over here at Sunglass Warehouse, and can you blame us? Located just a hop, skip, and a jump from the heart of Super City, we call Indianapolis home and couldn’t be more proud to do so!

One reason we’re excited? The first-ever Super Bowl Social Media Command Center! This team of local social media all-stars was established to increase communication among football fans, Indy, and the Super Bowl committee. Pretty neat, huh? In addition to all the useful tips, some of Indy’s social gurus have been tweeting great photos of the city and we couldn’t help but show them off.

And of course we snapped a few photos while we were out so we could share the Super excitement with all of you!

Happy Birthday Ben: He’s Our Hero, Read Why

Ben Franklin in search of a better world

On January 17, we celebrate the birthday of one of our Founding Fathers, Ben Franklin. Ben was a man of many trades: an author, a printer, a political theorist, a politician, scientist, musician, inventor, statesman, a satirist, and a diplomat. He is credited for many inventions, including the lightning rod and Franklin stove, but the one I am going to talk about is his invention of bifocals.

Some people are nearsighted, and there is a glasses prescription for that. Some people are farsighted, and there is a glasses prescription for that. However, what if someone is both nearsighted and farsighted? How can someone with such eye sight (or lack thereof) be helped? Well, thanks to Ben Franklin, bifocals do the trick. They can contain two different prescriptions within the same lens, helping to correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Of course, bifocals have come a long way since the days of Ben. There are the original lined bifocals, and then there are progressive lenses, or unlined bifocals. These glasses have no visible line between the nearsighted and farsighted prescriptions, which gives the wearer an uninterrupted transition when looking at objects up close and then at something in the distance. Today, there are also trifocals, which have three sections to correct near, intermediate, and distance vision.

Another modern-day favorite (especially here at Sunglass Warehouse) is bifocal sunglasses. These have all the vision-helping properties of bifocals, but with a tinted lens that protects your eyes from UV rays — read more about the benefits of sun readers here. With many different styles, such as full frame, half frame, metal frame, plastic frame, etc, there’s a pair for everyone.

Ben Franklin did a lot of wonderful things. He signed the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. He was a major figure in the American Enlightenment. He formed the first public library in America. He was a prominent abolitionist and civic activist. He was a very successful author. We certainly have many thanks to give to such a legend. He was one of the most influential Founding Fathers and helped shape our country into what it is today with many of his inventions, scientific studies, and philosophies. He never patented his inventions, and he wrote in his autobiography, “… as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours; and this we should do freely and generously.” That is why we are choosing to honor Ben on his birthday. He certainly is one of our heroes, especially since he invented the bifocals.

What’s your New Year’s Resolution?

We are preparing to say goodbye to 2011, and now the time of reflection is upon us. What did we accomplish during the year? What major life changes were there? Did we follow through on our resolutions? In addition to looking back, it’s also a time to look forward to 2012. What do you plan to accomplish this year? Here is a list of five common New Year’s resolutions and tips for following through with them.

New Year Calendar

A Healthier Lifestyle

A healthier lifestyle is something worth striving for, and there are many changes you can implement to help you achieve this resolution. The changes can start out subtle — a little goes a long way when it comes to your health. You could start with your diet. I’m as guilty as anyone else when it comes to eating candy and junk food over the holidays, but the holidays are over and you can put the candy aside. Try to pack your lunch more rather than eating out for lunch. Buy more fruits and vegetables for snacking and throw away the potato chips. Getting exercise is another good way to become a healthier you. Try some classes at a gym, start training for a marathon, or even just grab a friend and go on walks. After watching the Dear 16 year old me video, sun safety has been on my mind. Protect your eyes with a quality pair of sunglasses and remember to use sunscreen. Check out the Sun Authority to learn more sun safety tips. This is one of the most important resolutions to follow through with; your body deserves it.

Volunteer

Life is busy and it’s hard to find time to volunteer, but making it a priority and scheduling it into your routine will help. Giving back to your community is important and doing so will make you feel better for making a difference, so it’s a win-win situation. There are many places in need of your help. Find the place where your talents will be most useful. Ideas include serving once a week at a soup kitchen, walking dogs at an animal shelter, or coaching a youth sport.

Save money

Now is the time to start a budget, especially after holiday spending. Create a realistic budget of what you make and the money you need to pay your bills, put gas in the car, and bring food to the table. Once you do this, you will know how much money is left over for spending and saving. Allow yourself a little bit of money for fun if you can, but choose an amount you wish to save each month. Tips for saving money include eating out less or controlling impulse buys. If you’re in debt, consider financial counseling.

Start a hobby

I can spend hours browsing Pinterest, but I can honestly say I have yet to take on one of the DIY challenges or one of the mouth-watering recipes I have pinned. If you’re with me on this, then make it a point to pick up a new hobby. Learn to crochet, start scrapbooking, or dust off an old sewing machine. Having a hobby is a very healthy way to spend free time, helps you relax and unwind, and can save money if you start making gifts or your clothes.

Does anyone else have an ever-growing reading list in which you’re ready to make a dent? Shut off the TV and grab a book from the shelf. Strapped for time? Take 10 minutes before bed each night to spend with a book. Reading helps expand our imaginations and enhance our minds. It keeps you sharp. If you’ve forgotten the pleasure a great page-turner can bring you, now is the time to hit the bookstore or library. Check out these books to look forward to in 2012.

Those are just five of the many resolutions you and I will possibly be making on the eve of a new year. Do you have any tips to keeping them? Let me know about your New Year’s resolutions and how you intend on following through with them throughout the year. Happy New Year! We wish you many blessings in 2012.

Celebrity Moms in Winter’s Most Stylish

From cuddles to carpools, a mom’s job is never-ending. When you become a mom, no one is there with a job description; you learn on the fly, and no two days are the same. But with all that chauffeuring back and forth to sporting events, dance lessons, and everywhere in-between, it can be hard to find time for yourself, especially when it comes to that  no-fuss wardrobe (am I right, ladies?).  Well I’ve got good news: having a trendy, chic closet this season is easier than ever. Just take a page out of these celebrity mom’s books and imitate their winter style!

It seems like just yesterday Hilary Duff was Lizzie McGuire (and just a kid herself!), but now she’s pregnant with her own little one on the way. However, Hil hasn’t let pregnancy take away her right to look casual-chic.

She looks so comfortable here in an oversized sweater and slouchy jeans. The retro black shades, embellished booties, and mint green tote definitely add some pizazz to her attire. Layering is big this winter, so throw on that comfy sweater and accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

Here we have Hilary in a simple black shirt. She’s wearing a pair of dark aviators, hoop earrings, a leather satchel, and a knit hat to top off the look. Her look is classic, but the edgy accessories give it a fresh, updated feel.

Another stylish celeb with a busy schedule is Nicole Richie, mommy to Harlow and Sparrow. Here, she’s seen walking Harlow to ballet practice. She looks rocker-chic in the motorcycle jacket, black skinny jeans, boots, and pair of oversized shades. Buckles, leather, chains, and studs are trending now, and the best way to add them into your wardrobe (without looking too much like a biker babe) are by pairing them with flowy clothing and feminine touches.

I love this winter picture of Nicole and her little bundle! Mommies, be sure to keep yourself and your little ones warm with thick, adorable winter hats. They add just the right amount of warmth and cozy appeal to any winter outfit! Choose winter favorites like scarves, hats, and gloves in bright colors or winter whites, and don’t be afraid of a little embellishment or pattern. Let your warm weather gear make just as big of a fashion statement as your gorgeous New Year’s dress.

J Lo, mother to two adorable twins Max and Emme, is seen wearing one of the hottest winter shoe trends: over-the-knee boots. Pair this look with a coat and even some tights to stay extra warm! I’m loving those sky-high cat eye sunglasses of hers, too: from Kourtney Kardashian to Jennifer Lopez, it seems like celeb mommies can’t get enough of those retro shades.

Fur accents are huge right now and keep you extra toasty: try a vest like Miss Lopez, a fur coat for wintery festivities, or a fur scarf (we love this one!) for a luxxe accent piece. Now that is a woman who knows how to fight the cold with style!

I hope these celebrity styles have inspired you. Of course, once you become a mom, you have to worry about the little people before you worry about yourself, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish. Winter seems to be the time when style usually takes the backseat to warmth, but it doesn’t have to. Brighten up your mood when it’s a cold, dark day outside by dressing like one hot momma!

Gift Giving Procrastinators, We’ve Got You Covered

We’ve all been there: you get caught up in final exams, preparing for your annual holiday party, baking an excessive amount of cookies, or you are a man with forgetfulness coded into your DNA, and you fail to remember to take care of holiday shopping. You simply put off trekking to the mall or actually placing orders for loved ones’ gifts until all of the sudden, it’s too late.

You’re that person. You’ll be showing up to holiday parties empty-handed, or in my case, with loose-leaf pieces of paper featuring hand drawn renditions of the gifts I ordered online too late. My cheeks are getting rosy, and I’m starting to sweat just thinking about the expectant stares coming from family members waiting for their gifts.

Not this year. The Sunglass Warehouse team members have been “that person” one too many times. In an effort to ease the awkwardness of that situation, we’ve come up with what we call the Procrastinator’s Proof of Purchase.

Choose Your Gift Download 'Proof of Purchase'

This downloadable bad boy is a letter to give to the victim(s) of your procrastination. You simply fill out a present description, the reason you believe it to be the perfect gift for them, why they are receiving a piece of paper instead of the actual gift, and other heartfelt well wishes.

The Procrastinator’s Proof of Purchase ensures that last-minute shoppers will sleep a little easier knowing that they won’t be showing up empty handed this year. Download the PDF here, sit back and wait for the thank-yous to begin rolling-in.

Editor’s note: If procrastination is a year-round problem for you, and you find yourself running into this gift-giving (or lack thereof) issue outside of just the holiday season, the Proof of Purchase form is also appropriate for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. A permanent download is recommended for you folks.

DIY Sunglasses Storage Solution

Hey guys, Maggie here with a bit of a confession. I have a dresser drawer solely dedicated to what I fondly call, junk. It’s full of random phone chargers, a headband or two, batteries, an old bathing suit top, my retainer from 5th grade, and more sunglasses than I care to admit. It’s slightly hoarder-esque, no judgement please.

I was recently searching for a pair of gold colored aviators and after a thorough search of my apartment, I ended up digging around in the abyss that is my junk drawer. I found them, in two pieces. I attempted to fix the shades, but quickly realized they were beyond repair. RIP aviators.

As I laid my sunnies to rest, I realized that I was slowly killing off my sunglasses by storing them in this way. Each pair had a few new scratches on the lenses or had become slightly cock-eyed after doing time in the junk drawer. In the hopes of reviving my shades, I decided to get crafty with my friend and fellow SunglassWarehouse Blog editor, Molly.

After some brainstorming, we came up with this fabulous (and beyond easy) sunglasses storage solution.

All you need is:

  • A frame (head to the dollar store for a cheapie), we used an 11 x 14 inch frame so that we could have two rows of sunglasses.
  • A stapler
  • Wire
  • A hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Fabric of your choice (we used a cute scarf).

Sunglasses Organization

Take apart the frame, removing the glass and the backing. Ditch the glass and the lovely picture of an unknown family–the backing is what we really care about. Heat up the hot glue gun and roll up your sleeves!

Storing Sunglasses

Cut your fabric, or in our case a yellow pashmina I was no longer wearing, to the size of the frame backing. Allow an extra inch or so on all sides so that you can fold it over the back. Lay the fabric flat on a solid surface. On the side of the backing to be covered, place two small dollops of hot glue in the top corners and QUICKLY flip over on to the fabric leaving an inch of fabric as a “border.”

Sunglasses DIY

Press down on the glued corners to adhere it to the fabric—this won’t be totally holding the fabric in place, but it will keep it from shifting throughout the process. Add glue to the bottom corners and press.

Glasses Storage

Now that you’ve got the fabric in place, fold over the extra fabric border and begin to staple it to the backing. Be sure to staple close to the edges so that the staples will be hidden by the frame. I also recommend stapling two opposite sides one after the other, as opposed to adjacent sides.

How to Store Sunglasses

Once you have the fabric totally secured. Flip over your backing and measure the length of wire you will need. You’ll be wrapping the wire around the back so double the frame width and add a few inches. Lay out a few sunglasses to determine where to put your rows. We left about six inches between the top wire and the second wire. To affix the first row of wire at your predetermined height, staple one end of the wire to the edge of the backing. Leave about six inches to wrap around the back. The staple will keep the wire from sliding.

Sunglasses Craft

Staple the wire to other side as before, then wrap each end to the back and twist together. Repeat the last two steps for your second length of wire.

Storing Sunglasses

Place your backing back into the frame and secure.

Do it Yourself Sunglasses Storage

Now flip that puppy over and start loading it up with sunglasses and reading glasses!

Sunglasses StorageCat Eye Sunglasses | Animal Print Sunglasses | Wayfarers | Colored Wayfarers | Round Sunglasses | Reading Glasses

Hang your fabulous sunglasses storage piece on the wall or prop it on your dresser. To make this project your own, ditch the fabric for cute scrapbook pages and glue them to the backing with Modgepodge. Paint your frame or add fun details with paint or decoupage.

What do you think of our little project? Any other ideas to share with readers?
