When I think of a dream closet, I envision Carrie’s from Sex and the City. Who wouldn’t? It’s pure perfection. While the design and sheer size of hers may be out of your reach (I know I’ll never have one like hers!), there are some ways to make your own closet more appealing.
Usually, closets just need some organization and paring down. This will help you find every item you need — and it will add to the aesthetics of the wardrobe itself. Follow these tips, and you won’t want to shut your closet doors again!
When striving for your dream closet, keep these objectives in mind:
- Stow away
When rearranging a closet, you should never put the same number of clothes back in it as when you started. I know we all think we’ll find somewhere to wear our oldest clothes, but this is most often not the case. As a rule of thumb, if you haven’t worn something in a year, you won’t wear it often enough the next year to make it worth taking up space. Also remove ill-fitting clothes, as well as clothes that are damaged beyond repair. Removing these items will leave your closet much more manageable and easier to sift through. And, of course, you’ll have more space for new clothes!
2. Stow Away
You don’t need all of your clothes available all the time. Items that are out of season can be stowed in organized boxes under the bed or on upper shelves above your hanging clothes; this will leave the opportunity to achieve objective #3 more easily. Before stowing clothes for an off season, be sure to wash or dry clean each item. Storing dirty clothes can attract bugs and other creepy crawlies that will damage your clothes — eek!
Now that you have your closet pared down to what you wear and what’s in season, it’s time to display everything. Place your favorite items in visible spots so that you can take pride in your wardrobe every time you open the doors. My favorite part about my closet is my collection of shoes, so I keep my heels on a shoe rack with my favorite flats hanging from a cloth organizer. This also helps you pair together outfits more easily, as you’ll be able to visualize how they will coordinate. If you really want your closet to look nice, consider purchasing all matching hangers. Although this isn’t necessary, it has a really nice aesthetic effect.
Everyone has their own system, but make sure every item has a place that makes sense. Some people organize their clothes by style, others organize by color, and some people organize by how frequently they wear something. Personally, I prefer to organize mine by color and again by season. After your closet is organized, keep it in line by putting items back in their spot every time. This will ensure that clothes don’t get hidden and forgotten when you need them most.
Follow these tips, and you’ll have a closet that’s almost as fab as Carrie’s!
